LAND ACCESS
Land access performance

Rio Tinto's activities generally require the exclusive use of land for mining, processing, smelting and associated infrastructure such as ports, railways and power stations. We refer to this as our footprint and we strive to manage it by:

  • minimising disturbance;
  • progressively rehabilitating land as it becomes available, where commercially and technically feasible;
  • where possible maintaining ecosystem functions, biodiversity and habitat; and
  • actively planning for closure.

S&E help
To mine metals and minerals we need to access and use land on a temporary basis. This may compete with other uses and will change habitats.
