In order to implement the Group policy, businesses undertake programmes and initiatives, usually aimed at securing benefits for communities or to mitigate the negative effects of Group operations. These programmes vary from direct involvement by businesses, arising from consultation with affected communities, to bi- and multi sector partnerships that can involve community based organisations, non governmental organisations and other international agencies. This section outlines the resources and effort expended by Group businesses in 2003 in making contributions to communities.
We also encourage business development.
Community contributions provide only an indication of how much we contribute, rather than the outcomes realised. Therefore in 2003, for the second year, we collected information on the outputs of our community programmes, using a framework for input/output measurement.
Baseline studies and community surveys are also an important part of effective community relations.
We are seeking a deeper understanding of the linkages between the economic contributions of mining activities and the economies in which they take place so as to maximise our contribution to economic development.
All of the Group's businesses have again produced their own, local, social and environment reports, many of which are now verified by the communities concerned.
