Rio Tinto actively participated in studies on cyanide management under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). We seconded a senior manager to UNEP to help develop tools to address the safe use of cyanide in the mining environment, its role in mineral extraction, its recycling and destruction.

The International Cyanide Management Code for Manufacture, Transport and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold was issued in May 2002. The International Cyanide Management Institute has been established to administer and promote the code as well as to manage the certification process.
