Rio Tinto is a member of the WBCSD and participates in its projects. The WBCSD published "The Business Case for Sustainable Development - Making a Difference towards the Johannesburg Summit 2002 and Beyond", which offers fresh views on how business can contribute to achieve a sustainable society.

Rio Tinto was involved in a number of WBCSD projects, particularly the Corporate Reporting on Sustainable Development project (co led by Rio Tinto) which is aimed at demonstrating and communicating the link between sustainability and good long term financial performance. This includes scrutiny of the Global Reporting Initiative as a focal point for the development of common reporting practices.

Rio Tinto is actively engaged in a number of other WBCSD working groups and in cross cutting sectoral programmes.
