Rio Tinto took a leading role in the Global Mining Initiative (GMI) an industry programme to develop a sustainable development model for the mining minerals and metals industry.

Rio Tinto contributed industry viewpoints in key areas to the Mining Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) project, the report of which was published in May 2002 and which provides directions for the industry to achieve improved social and environment performance as contributors to sustainable development.
