At the Simandou iron ore project in Guinea, west Africa, substantial progress was made in 2003 to establish a sound community relations programme. As Simandou is an exploration project and progress through to full scale operations is some years away, a fundamental challenge is trying to keep the community programme at an appropriate level while managing some very high local expectations.
