Sustainable development Rio Tinto Energy: Sustainable development programme Arandis economic diversity project

The town of Arandis was initially established during the development of the Rössing uranium mine in Namibia, and has been almost totally reliant on income and support from the mine for most of its existence. More recently, the mine has been working with the Namibian Government and the Rössing Foundation to support the development of Arandis into a more independent community with a diversifying economic base. Although still dependent on the mine, initiatives to encourage Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) development, tourism and education related support services have commenced with some promising early success.
