Targets have been established to measure progress towards
meeting the policies and goals of the Group. Our policies are outlined
in the publication The
way we work. To support our health, safety and environmnet
policy we have three goals: zero fatalities and elimination of occupational
injury and illness; zero infringements of HSE regulations; and zero spills
to the environment.
To this end, we set targets in 1998 and the progress to
date against them is:
|
Target 1: Reduce the number of injuries
at each operation by 50 per cent in 2000 and 2001.
The reduction in lost time injuries of 19 per cent, while reflecting
the efforts made at businesses, did not meet the 50 per cent target.

Target
2: An annual 20 per cent reduction in incidents through 2001
The number of significant incidents has remained the same per operation.
We recorded 269 spills to the environment of which 19 were significant.

Target
4: All operations to have in place formal closure plans by 2000 relevant
to the length of their remaining life.
All operations submitted their closure plans for review at the end
of 2000. Operations acquired since the beginning of 2000 will be required
to complete a closure plan by 2003. |
Target
5: All operations to publish a social and environment report including
specific performance targets by 2001.
All businesses and the Exploration group are producing social and
environment reports for 2001. |
Target
6: A five per cent reduction in on site greenhouse gas emissions per
unit of production by 2001 based on the 1998 level.
A reduction of 4.8 per cent was achieved by the end of 2001. More
