Below is important information to assist you in applying for a graduate, intern or work study opportunity in the United States with Rio Tinto. Due to the high volume of resumes received, only candidates selected for interview will be contacted. Candidates graduating Fall 2012 or later

Internship or work study opportunities

Internships provide students exciting opportunities during summer break to work beside seasoned professionals on meaningful projects and gain valuable experience about business in the mining industry. Our interns are offered a competitive salary plus relocation assistance. The internship period is a fixed term - generally May/June to Aug/Sept. The expectation is 40+ hours per week and work schedules vary. At the end of the internship, interns will present to business unit leadership. This presentation should include a synopsis of projects, learning and other experiences from the internship.

Work Study Opportunities provide students with the opportunity to work part-time while completing their degree. This additional opportunity will further complement students' education with more technical experience. Work study students may also be able to satisfy academic requirements or complete academic projects using their experiences working at our sites. Work study employees are offered a competitive salary and will complete a summer internship. When classes resume in the fall, work schedules are determined on an individual basis with a usual workload of 2-3 days per week. At the end of the work study internship, interns will present to business unit leadership. This presentation should include a synopsis of projects, learning and other experiences from the internship.

Candidates graduating before Fall 2012

Graduate opportunities

Graduate Opportunities are for recent graduates who are beginning their career. These opportunities are ideal for recent graduates with less than two year's relevant work experience and best suited to candidates who will graduate Fall 2011 or Spring 2012. Each of our graduates is assigned a mentor to guide them through the first two years of his or her career with Rio Tinto. Generally after one year, an opportunity is presented to the graduate to gain experience in a different team, with a different leader or potentially at a different business unit or plant. This creates an opportunity for the graduate to expand his or her knowledge in another area of the business. After the two year graduate program is complete, the graduate is free to explore all opportunities within our company for a permanent position. Our graduates are offered competitive salaries and a full benefits package including health and retirement.
