Nechako Reservoir

Nechako Reservoir

The Nechako Reservoir provides stable, low cost, green hydro-electric power to energize the Kitimat smelter. The hydroelectric reservoir was formed by the construction of the Kenney Dam on the Nechako River and nine smaller dams which inundated a chain of lakes and rivers. The Nechako Reservoir finished filling in 1957, and is 233 kilometres long, with a water surface of 910 square kilometres.

Our commitment to ongoing stewardship of the watershed environment is important to ensuring that environmental considerations are balanced with operational ones and our watershed resources are protected and enhanced in the coming decades.
