Corporate governance
The directors of Rio Tinto believe that high standards of corporate governance are essential to its objective to maximise the overall long term return to shareholders through a strategy of investing in large, cost competitive mines and businesses. The following describes how this belief is applied in practice.
As Rio Tinto's three main listings are in London, Melbourne and New York, the directors have referred to The Combined Code on Corporate Governance, published by the UK Financial Reporting Council (the Code), the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) Corporate Governance Principles and Recommendations (the ASX Principles), and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) Corporate Governance Standards (the NYSE Standards), as well as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. See the compliance statements.
