Management systems
Rio Tinto's occupational heath standards require that operations have a system for managing occupational health. Auditing of compliance with the occupational health standards, including implementation of systems, will commence in 2005. Some of the requirements of a system include:
- A policy, consistent with Rio Tinto's statement of business practice, The way we work.
- Improvement action plans for preventing new cases of occupational illness.
- Targets to drive improvement: in addition to business or operation level targets, there are Group targets for occupational health.
- An induction process for new employees and contractors. At the end of 2005 all but one operation had topics on occupational health in their induction programmes and 94 per cent had refresher training that covered awareness of occupational health issues.
- Minimum requirements are set out for contractors and suppliers. Sixty three health audits of contractors were carried out at 22 operations in 2005.
- Checking and review, through audits and by measuring and reporting performance. Sixty two external health audits were conducted at 40 operations during 2005.
