Occupational illnesses are defined as harm arising from workplace exposures that last more than one shift.
Leading indicators are those measures of workplace conditions that can be used to assess the likelihood of illnesses developing in the future. For instance, long term exposures to loud noise leads to noise induced hearing loss and therefore noise levels are a leading indicator of future hearing loss. Where they are available leading indicators are preferable to lagging indicators.
Lagging indicators measure the health outcomes of workplace conditions. For instance the number of new cases of noise induced hearing loss is a lagging indicator.
