Input/output measurement
Rio Tinto has always recognised that the Group's expenditure (and in kind assistance) on community relations programmes and community investment, are only the inputs. The initiatives and programmes the Group supports aim to realise actual benefits for affected communities. These benefits are the proof of the Group's performance in community relations.
Using a simple input/output framework, we are starting to report community programmes to show Rio Tinto's inputs (usually expenditure) and partner contributions (or "leverage"). On the output side, the framework shows community benefits and benefits to the business.
Based on the assumption that the people who are intended to benefit from these programmes should also have a say in the success of these programmes, operations also report whether or not there has been community confirmation of the benefit provided.
