Community relations results
In order to implement Group policy, businesses undertake programmes and initiatives, usually aimed at securing benefits for communities or to mitigate the negative effects of Group operations. These programmes arise from consultation with affected communities. These may include bi- and multi-sectoral partnerships.
All Group businesses produce their own local social and environment (or sustainable development) reports on an annual basis. These should meet the information needs of communities with respect to performance and issues raised during the year. We believe these reports are the most appropriate means to ensure transparency in our relationships with our communities. The reports also provide our neighbouring communities the opportunity to understand the business.
In 2005 we had four significant community relations related incidents in Darwin and Boron, and at Hail Creek and Rössing mines. Click here for detailed descriptions and follow up actions.
We also support business development initiatives. One such project is a timber harvesting cooperative partnership between Comalco and local businesses in Australia. Another, run by The Palabora Foundation in South Africa, aims to provide working opportunities for local black economic empowerment companies in the region.
Community based training and skills development play an integral part of our strategy. Training can address community concerns for employment. With youth and disadvantaged minorities, training can provide essential skills needed in order to work. Over the long term, transferable skills helps build sustainable communities.
