Data reliability
Data is collected according to the criteria developed by LBG (previously known as the London Benchmarking Group). We have been collecting data using this framework for several years and therefore expect a reasonable degree of uniformity and reliability in approach and businesses reporting.
Following discussion within the LBG, it has been agreed that direct payments can be included as a community contribution under its format, if they fulfil three requirements: they are legally enforceable; they have clear community benefit; and the operation continues to have influence over how the money is spent. However, Rio Tinto believes that all direct payments should be included in the calculation of total community contributions because these payments do benefit recipient communities, and has reported accordingly.
The data in this section covers 100 per cent of the contribution by each of Rio Tinto's managed operations. In previous years some of the contributions for non managed operations were included and as a result, comparisons cannot be made with data published previously.
