Contributions to communities

Rio Tinto businesses contributed a total of US$93.4 million to their affected communities in 2005. Of this total, US$37.3 million was community investment, and US$28.9 million in direct community payments made under legally binding agreements aimed at supporting community programmes over the long term, either directly or in partnership with other organisations.

In 2005:

  • 40 per cent was community investment, which covers initiatives in areas such as health, education, community infrastructure and enterprise development. This reflects the effort and resources that Rio Tinto businesses put into providing socio economic programmes that support and enhance the livelihoods of those communities affected by the Group's operations;
  • 31 per cent was direct payments to communities, usually under formal, legally binding agreements; and
  • 17 per cent represented management costs associated with these programmes.
