Serving our communities

Cultural heritage

The Rio Tinto community standard requires that cultural heritage be managed with relevant communites. Based on the standard, any cultural heritage feature should be managed in consultation with relevant communities. In achieving this, all businesses should:

  • Compile a list of cultural heritage features with sensitivity to relevant cultural norms.
  • Design and cite their activities to prevent damage to non-replicable cultural heritage where ever possible.
  • If disturbance is unavoidable, seek approval from those whom the cultural heritage feature has significance.

Cultural heritage management is intended to integrate accepted heritage management practices into standard Rio Tinto business operating systems.

Cultural heritage management plans, developed in consultation with the community, should ensure culturally appropriate custodianship and mechanisms to minimise accidental impact on cultural heritage values.

The Rio Tinto Cultural Heritage Management Guideline for Australian Businesses requires all operations in Australia to have in place a cultural heritage management system developed in consultation with the relevant communities that meets specified outcomes.
