Safety

Management systems

Rio Tinto's safety standards require that operations have a system for managing safety. Auditing of compliance in implementing the safety standards commenced in mid 2000. Some of the requirements of a system include:

  • A policy, consistent with Rio Tinto's statement of business practice, The way we work.
  • Rio Tinto safety standard A1 requires all operations to implement a safety management system. Audits have been undertaken to determine the extent to which operations are successfully and fully implementing safety and health systems. First round safety audits were completed in July 2002, second round audits were commenced in August 2002 and third round audits commenced in August 2004.
  • Improvement action plans for eliminating all injuries, safe work systems, risk assessment procedures, ensuring that effective controls and safe work procedures exist for all hazardous activities and a process for investigation of incidents to prevent their recurrence.
  • Targets to drive improvements in Safety results.
  • An induction process for new employees and contractors: at the end of 2005, 99 per cent of operations had topics on safety in their induction programmes and 91 per cent had refresher training that covered awareness of safety issues.

In 2005, there were 383 personnel working on safety at our operations. Additional safety personnel work in head office and support functions.
