Lost time injuries and all injuries

We have had strong improvements in the lost time injury frequency rate (LTIFR) and all injury frequency rate (AIFR), with reductions of 14 per cent and 11 per cent respectively. We met our LTIFR target, however, we are behind target for AIFR and this will be a focus for 2006.The LTIFR for 2005 was 0.56 per 200,000 hours worked by employees and contractors. The downward trend in LTIFR at Rio Tinto managed operations indicates that safety programmes implemented over recent years are contributing to improved results.

Fines for infringement of safety regulations in 2005 involved 11 operations and totalled US$87,900 (2004: US$19,000 at eight operations). This includes a fine of US$62,942 for an incident at Energy Resources of Australia's Ranger operation in 2004, where an employee was struck and pinned under a Ball Mill feed chute. This incident resulted in a significant injury requiring hospitalisation.
