Terms used
Closure, restoration and other costs include costs to remediate environmental disturbances from the development and operation of a mine. They also include employee, community and other costs incurred as a consequence of closure.
Footprint is the land we have disturbed for our mining, processing and related activities. It includes land we are currently mining and land we have rehabilitated.
Infrastructure includes buildings and processing activities that could reasonably be expected to remain for the life of the operation.
IUCN categories I is a area of land and/or sea processing some outstanding or representative ecosystems, geological or physiological features and/or species, available primarily for scientific research and/or environmental monitoring.
IUCN categories Ib is a large area of unmodified or slightly modified land or sea, retaining its natural character and influence.
IUCN categories II is a natural area of land or sea, designated to
(a) protected ecological integrity of one of more ecosystems for present and future generations,
(b) exclude exploitation or occupation to the purposes of designation of the area and
(c) provide foundation for spiritual, scientific, educational, recreational and visitor opportunities.
IUCN categories III is area containing one, or more, specific natural/cultural features which is outstanding or unique vale because of its inherent rarity, representative or aesthetic qualities or cultural significance.
IUCN categories IV is a area of land or sea subject to active intervention for management purposes so as to ensure maintenance of habitats and/or to meet the requirements of specific species.
Disturbed land is the area of land which has been disturbed for mining, processing and related activities, such as haul roads, waste rock dumps and tailings dams (including infrastructure).
Ramsar listed sites are wetlands of significance which have been listed under ‘The Convention of Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat’ (commonly referred to as the Ramsar Convention).
Rehabilitated land is the area of land that has been treated for final closure and now only requires care and maintenance. Generally this land will have received some sort of surface treatment (eg stabilised, ripped, covered with topsoil and seeded) and may be revegetated.
UNIESCO World heritage convention provides for the designation of natural and/or cultural areas of "outstanding universal value" as world heritage sites (properties), with the principal aim of fostering international co-operation in safeguarding these important areas.
