Biodiversity

In 2004, Rio Tinto consolidated its commitment to biodiversity with the implementation of a biodiversity strategy, and the introduction of biodiversity questions into the annual social and environment survey process. Data collected has provided a baseline assessment of the level of awareness within the Group of biodiversity management.

Biodiveristy Assessments

By the end of 2005, 80 per cent of operations had carried out biodiversity assessments at some stage in their project lifecycle; many of these (56 per cent) were conducted as part of the operation's Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process. While the EIA process is generally regarded as a primary vehicle for biodiversity assessment, 27 per cent of operations had carried out additional assessments outside the EIA framework.
