External engagement
Sir Robert Wilson, chairman of Rio Tinto from 1997 to 2003 led a delegation of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) to the World Parks Congress in South Africa in September 2003 which produced a framework for action that enhances the mining industry's contribution to biodiversity conservation. Also in 2003 a roundtable meeting was held between ICMM and IUCN (The World Conservation Union) to advance the dialogue on addressing issues of common concern.
Rio Tinto continued to undertake extensive consultations with conservation and scientific organisations in 2004 to gain multiple perspectives on the significance of biodiversity. Contacts during the year involved attendance at several events including The IUCN World Conservation Forum in Bangkok in November and workshops, bilateral and multilateral meetings and conferences. This includes engagement in the ICMM's working group on biodiversity
The goal of engaging with others is to understand their perspectives, concerns and preferences for biodiversity management. If we understand these and when appropriate, incorporate them in our work, our goal of bringing about verifiable improvements in operating performance in biodiversity management is likely to meet more of the expectations of external constituencies. We believe that improved performance is the essential precursor of recognition and reputational advantage, and that these in turn will lead to improved opportunities for the Group.
