Our biodiversity partnerships
Biodiversity partnerships play a significant role in how we manage issues within Rio Tinto at both the corporate and operational level. The partnership managers from BirdLife International, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Earthwatch International and Fauna & Flora international play important roles as biodiversity advisors to the group’s operations. In a number of cases (eg, the Madagascar project) these roles have been formalised through the formation of biodiversity advisory committees.
At the corporate level the biodiversity partnerships are playing a key role in developing the tools and methodologies that we will use as we work towards our long term goal of "net positive impact on biodiversity". Specific examples include:
- The Integrated Biodiversity Assessment and Planning (IBAP) tool: a joint initiative between Rio Tinto, Conservation International and the Alcoa Foundation.
- The Biodiversity Performance Measure Project: a jointly managed programme with Earthwatch International that involves all of our biodiversity activities.
- The Biodiversity Offsets Project: a collaborative project involving key representatives from the biodiversity partners and other external NGO and intergovernmental agencies.
