  • Percentage of good, materials, and services purchased locally;
  • Percentage of workforce from local communities;
  • Investment in public infrastructure and its maintenance; and
  • Compensation payments.
  • Significant local economic contribution and development impacts have been assessed at a number of our sites including Diavik, Richards Bay Minerals, Rossing, QMM, Palabora, Pilbara Iron, Comalco, Murowa Diamonds, Argyle, IOC, QIT, Rio Tinto Coal Australia. Please see case studies and local S&E reports
  • The policies which drive local development include our Communities Policy and our Communities Standard.
  • Within the communities programmes sites must develop 5 year plans with the communities and provide annual updates in which they set out the community preferences for the programmes and, where those are economic, we work together to maximise them.
  • Twenty five percent of supplies are purchased locally (2005 SD Review, page 30/31).
  • Contributions to Communities
  • In 2005, Rio Tinto businesses supported over 2,000 socio economic programmes. These covered a range of activities including health, education, business development, housing, environment and agriculture. Rio Tinto directly invested US$93.4 million in communities related to our business (page 30/36 of 2005 SD report).
  • Case studies: Argyle is of particular relevance to this indicator.Communities Policy and our Communities Standard.
  • Rio Tinto definition of local: the area that encompasses where the mine is and where the majority of employees working at the operation live, and from where the operation would receive local supplies. The delineation of the local level should relate to the operation (the site of social and environmental impact) and NOT be extended to include a head office remote from the operation. E175
