Environmental results
Minimising, mitigating and remediating the harmful effects of our operations on the environment require us to develop, and report against, indicators which reflect the environmental inputs, outputs and impacts of our activities. Areas of reporting include:
- Implementation of management systems including planning, implementation and operation, and checking and review.
- Occurrence and resolution of environment incidents, including spills and fines for infringement of environmental regulations.
- Greenhouse gas emissions resulting directly from our activities and indirectly through the use of our products.
- Energy used at our operations.
- Water we withdraw from the environment, use at operations and return to the environment.
- Air emissions associated with our activities.
- Generation and management of mineral and non mineral waste.
Rio Tinto also reports on our land use activities, referred to as our footprint, and the way we manage it. This includes biodiversity and closure management and can be found under Land access.
