Data reliability
Data for volumes of water withdrawn, used and returned to the environment are either measured (for example with flow meters) or are estimated (for example based on pump flow rates).
Loadings of potential contaminants are calculated based on concentrations of potential contaminants in water and volumes of water returned to the environment. For those operations that return volumes of water greater than five gigalitres at concentrations below the methodological detection limit, a concentration equivalent to half the detection limit is used to determine an estimate of maximum potential loading.
