Permit exceedances
In 2005, 17 operations exceeded their permitted environmental discharge criteria. Some underlying causes and their associated remedial actions are listed below;
- Total suspended solids limit was exceeded due a thickener breakdown.
- Rainfall during closure activities caused suspended solids exceedances. Additional sediment traps have been created.
- pH criteria was exceeded due to poor sludge neutralisation. A new neutralisation system was installed at the end of 2005.
- A pipe failure caused a non licensed discharge. The pipe was inspected and repaired.
- Fluoride, pH and total iron exceedances occurred due to unseasonably high rainfall events.
