Terms Used

Hazardous material includes all waste classified as hazardous by the regulations applying in the country of operation.

Incineration is a controlled process by which solid and liquid combustible waste is burned

Inpit backfill is the return of waste materials to the mine from where they were extracted.

Recycling and reuse is any reprocessing or reuse of material that diverts it from the waste stream.

Storage means the temporary holding of materials until a final disposal location is identified.

Tailings dam is an engineered structure built to typically hold fine waste from the milling process.

Waste rock dump is an area which has been designed to allow waste rock to be placed for permanent disposal.

Mineral waste is any discarded, rejected or unwanted material from the portion of the mined geological resource that is not shipped from the operation as product.

Non-mineral waste is any discarded, rejected or unwanted material associated with consumables used for mining, processing and related activities (ie mining, milling, smelting and refining).
