Data reliability
SOx emissions reported in this section include emissions from burning of sulphur - containing fossil fuels and the oxidation of mineral sulphides in smelting processes. Fossil fuels consumed include coke, coal, heavy fuel oil, diesel. Mobile source data was collected for the first time in 2003.
SOx capture is reported based on sulphur input to core industrial processes that is not emitted to the atmosphere, and is expressed as SO2 equivalent. Sulphur capture is measured at some operations and calculated based on sulphur mass balance at others.
Reported fluoride emissions include fluoride released from consumption of aluminium fluoride and calcium fluoride containing "bath" in aluminium smelting. These emissions are based on measured data. Fluoride is also emitted from coal and coke combustion. These emissions are measured at aluminium smelters and calculated elsewhere based on fluoride content of fuel.
Reported SOx emissions are either measured or calculated based on sulphur content of materials combusted or oxidised.
