AIOH and MCA Contributions
Rio Tinto supports the work of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH) and the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) through participation of our specialists in the occupational health field on the AIOH Exposure Standards Committee and on the MCA Health Working Group.
During the year the AIOH Exposure Standards Committee reviewed and commented on the following:
- NOHSC proposed amendments to the adopted "National Exposure Standards for Atmospheric Contaminants in the Occupational Environment" [NOHSC:1003(1995)], regarding assignment of a 'skin' notation to several chemicals.
- The Senate "Inquiry into workplace exposure to toxic dust".
- NOHSC proposed amendments to the adopted "National Exposure Standards for Atmospheric Contaminants in the Occupational Environment", regarding resolving inconsistencies between the carcinogen classifications and sensitiser notations in the Adopted National Exposure Standards compared with the classifications assigned to the same substance in accordance with the Approved Criteria for Classifying Hazardous Substances 3rd Edition.
- Recommendations from a review of the National Standard for Occupational Noise (Standard) and the National Code of Practice for the Management and Protection of Hearing at Work (Code), produced by the Australian Hearing National Acoustic Laboratories together with the University of New South Wales.
During the year the MCA Health Working Group:
- Reviewed and commented on the NOHSC manual handling standard and code of practice.
- Reviewed and commented on the Senate "Inquiry into workplace exposure to toxic dust".
- Reviewed a list of potential indicators of occupational health and proposed key indicators in terms of value and availability of information.
- Reviewed a pilot industry Job Exposure Matrix (JEM), focussed on noise.
- Commented on an Environmental and Community Health: Emerging Issues study.
