HIsmelt®
Rio Tinto's HIsmelt® project, a revolutionary new iron smelting technology, has addressed the risk of future water shortages by planning for the use of treated waste water at its plant which is being commissioned at Kwinana in Western Australia. The waste water would otherwise be discharged to the ocean.
HIsmelt's involvement provided the critical base load demand needed by the state's water corporation to enable the effluent treatment project to proceed. The treated water is of high quality which will reduce water treatment requirement on the HIsmelt site. The arrangement will also improve security of water availability and result in a lowering of the amount of effluent discharged to the local marine environment.
