Rio Tinto continues ethical leadership
Rio Tinto has gained top level rankings for ethical performance from analysts who monitor business performance in sustainable development.
Rio Tinto is listed as a Gold Class company in the latest SAM Sustainability Yearbook. The ranking is based on the outcomes of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. To be included in the Sustainability Yearbook companies must fall within the top 15 per cent of each sector.
Zurich based SAM (Sustainable Asset Management) analyses the 2,500 largest companies in the world across 57 sectors.
To be eligible for the SAM Gold Class category the company must have achieved a minimum score of 75 per cent and the score must lie within five per cent of the SAM sector leader. Xstrata is listed as the sector leader for mining and Anglo American and Newmont are listed in the Silver Class. BHP Billiton makes up the Bronze Class for mining.
At the same time, Geneva based Covalence has published its annual ethical ranking covering 541 multinationals within 18 sectors based on a calculation methodology that combines popularity and diversified performance.

- Anglo American ranked 122nd overall and 3rd in basic resources
- By comparison, BHP Billiton ranked 292nd overall and 15th in basic resources
